The UK Health and Fitness Industry.
The UK Health and Fitness industry has more choices than ever before from HIIT to Calisthenics to Recovery Yoga. There is a rich choice of options to meet the needs of individuals who wish to facilitate or partake in.
The 2017 ‘State of the UK Fitness Industry Report’ reveals that the UK health and fitness industry continues to grow. Driven from the private sector, which has more clubs, more members and a greater market value than ever before. 1 in every 7 people in the UK is a member of a gym. There are now over 9.7 million fitness members in the UK which has encouraged a very healthy all-time high of 14.9% growth from the previous year.
“It may be premature to call the period to 2020 “the golden age of fitness” according to David Minton, Director of Leisure DB 2016, and he suggests “further growth will only be limited to the imagination of those pushing the boundaries. The number of gyms is on course to go over 7,000 for the first time, total membership to exceed 10 million. The market value is expected to reach £5 billion and the penetration rate should easily surpass 15%.”
A Healthier Future
As cardiovascular disease and obesity continue to grow the industry has an important role in the health of current and future generations. The industry adapts to meet these challenges long term. Changing factors in the industry included an aging population and a strong growth of Millennials seeking wellness and active pursuits. Populations are increasingly concerned about exercising more and eating smarter than previous generations, in return willing to invest and spend on intrinsic rewards.
Fitness certification programs continue to grow, says the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) 2016, and while standards vary among organisations, getting certified simply means you are a legit trainer that has studied and passed a test on gym safety, proper exercise form, and training guidelines. ACSM reports states, personal training has always been part of the top 10 trends. “Personal trainers will continue to be an important part of the professional staff of health and fitness centres.”
